New Expert Group to rule over us

It is amazing with what arrogance our 'Elites' rule over us - not a single person in this list of 'Dignitaries' (the swear word due jour from now on) owes his position on this 'Taskforce' to a democratic mandate. Does one need a stronger argument for the introduction of Direct Democary?

Where is the Mandate from the 'Civil Society'?

Another 'Global Forum' that claims to speak for you and me. The buzzword of the 'Civil Society' is easily used by unrepresentative Elites, Experts and Lobbyists to create a smokescreen for their aims. The mythical Civil Society can only be the collective will of the citizens, expressed in a majority vote on the specific issues and by elections that safeguard minorities and fundamental rights set down in the Constitution.

Average Citizen has no influence (Study)

"...economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence." (Testing Theories of American Politics: Elities, Interest Groups and Average Citizens, Gilens and Page)

While Direct Democracy would not be able to balance the excessive influence of Elites and Lobbies - it would even allow them another avenue to garner support for their policies - it would definitely give the average citizen more say on all matters.

Davos: Destructive Elites ruling our Lives

Much attention is now focused on grass economic inequality. But while universal suffrage in the 'Western' democracies gives the impression of political equality this does not reflect reality. A narrow and interrelated caste of political, bureaucratic and business functionaries controls the levers of political and economic power under the fig leaf of democratic procedures. The only effective antidote is the introduction of Direct Democracy on all levels of government.

No need to trust the 'Elites'

A system of Direct Democracy puts the ultimate power over all decisions into the hands of the citizens. There is not need for an ‘implicit deal between elites and the people’ (Martin Wolf, Financial Times). Today’s elites are mostly self-appointed and self-perpetuating under a thin veneer of pseudo-democratic rituals. But whichever party wins will pursue nearly identical policies and regularly ignore the wishes of the majority of the electorate.
